Question:

Can Zewa Blood Pressure Monitors be Calibrated?

Answer:

To answer this question, we need to first differentiate between consumer (home) blood pressure monitors and professional (Dr. Office or Hospital) blood pressure monitors. Professional grade blood pressure monitors can be manually adjusted, consumer blood pressure monitors can not. There are obviously many more differences between the 2 types of devices, but for this article this is the main difference so that we can explain the calibration process.

What is a calibration?

During a calibration process a blood pressure monitor's readings are compared to a calibration device (which is basically another blood pressure monitor). If readings are within 3mmHg, the device is within the calibration, but if readings fall outside that range, it is considered out of calibration.

What happens if a device is out of calibration?

If a professional grade blood pressure monitor falls outside of a calibration it is recalibrated, in other words it can be adjusted to match the readings. The same process does NOT apply to a consumer blood pressure monitors. Consumer blood pressure monitors can't be adjusted.

Usually when a person with a consumer blood pressure monitor is asking about calibration is because the readings they received are not what is expected. Calibration is usually not the issue as an electronic product does not just change what it is intended to do, so besides calibration what can cause readings to be different.
